Pearson Publishing Honors HCC Faculty

Two HCC faculty were recently honored in Pearson's "One Professor" movement by their students. Through student-submitted stories, "One Professor" pays tribute to faculty who have made a lasting impression, inside and outside the classroom, on the students they serve.

The faculty honored were Lorie Maltby and Tony Strawn and you can see the student honoring them in a YouTube presentation.

Ask students if one professor has helped shape their lives, and the answer is almost always the same: a smile, a nod, and an inspiring story. These stories are courageous, powerful, and at times humorous, but one fact remains the same: "One Professor" helped them to achieve more than they ever thought possible. Pearson is dedicated to honoring educators who help shape students’ lives and change how they view the world forever.

Fall Financial Aid Deadline

The HCC Financial Aid Office is currently processing aid for the 2013-2014 academic year. The deadline for students to submit all financial aid paperwork for the Fall Semester is July 15, 2013 . Failure to do so may result in being dropped from classes prior to the start of the term per the college’s drop for non-payment policy as published in the current schedule of classes.

Submissions needed for HCC Literary Magazine

HCC's Literary Magazine invites HCC students and staff to submit their original creative work for publication. Please e-mail your entries as an attachment by September 13, 2013 and provide your name, address, and phone number.

For each work, include its title and category (art, poetry, haiku, fiction, or non-fiction). There is a limit of five poems, five haiku, three short stories, and three creative non-fiction essays. Artwork is accepted up to five submissions per artist. Prizes are awarded in all categories: (poetry, haiku, fiction, non-fiction, and art): $75 first prize; $50 second prize; $25 third prize. Haiku prizes are $125/ $100/ $75.

HCC Commencement May 10

HCC's Spring Commencement will be Friday, May 10th, at 7 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center. There are 202 potential graduates earning a total of 279 various credentials. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Charles Shearer, president emeritus of Transylvania University and former HCC faculty member and coach of the basketball team. A reception in his honor will be held at 6:15 p.m. in the STC Cyber Café.

HCC hosts Honors Night Ceremony

Henderson Community College will host its annual Honors Night on Friday, May 3rd at 7:00 p.m. in the McCormick Hall of the Fine Arts Center. Discipline and organizational awards will be presented to students who have demonstrated a sincere interest beyond normal requirements and who have performed in an excellent manner in the discipline or organization. Also, Scholarship and Academic awardees will be recognized along with the winners of the Scholastic and General Excellence Awards. The ceremony is free and open to the public.

Henderson Community College Adult Education Program is offering a Fast-Track GED class at the Herron Center in Morganfield, Ky beginning April 30th through May 30th. Classes are every Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Students who pass the test will be eligible to participate in the graduation ceremony on June 11 at Henderson Community College. Community Appreciation Fair April 25th!

An on-campus Community Appreciation Fair is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 4:00-7:00 pm. Most of the activities will take place in or near the Sullivan Technology Center. However, there will be activities across campus.

This event will be an opportunity for students, employees, and the community-at large to enjoy food (hot dogs, chips, and cotton candy), games (inflatable slide, 2 liter ring toss, duck pond, face painting, photo booth), Student Showcase (Joe’s Place), campus activities (AAS program demonstrations), entertainment (Songbird Entertainment and live music), and door prizes (Nook Tablet, Nook Simple Touch, Cincinnati Reds tickets, Evansville Ice Men tickets, Evansville Otters tickets, St. Louis Rams jersey, & more) while also learning more about HCC. Please bring your families and friends and join us for a fun-filled evening!

Henderson Community College Workforce Solutions is offering a Basic Excel class. The class will be held at the Sullivan Technology Center (room 302), 2660 South Green Street, Henderson, Kentucky on April 25th and May 2nd from 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM. Cost is $119.00 for the 6 hour, 2 day course.

Northwest KY Forward is hosting a job fair at Henderson Community College on Thursday, April 11th from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. in the Watkins Training Lab, Sullivan Tech Center. This is a great opportunity to meet with employers who are hiring!

Among some of the employers who will be in attendance are Alcan, Methodist Hospital, IWT, Sitex, J&B Mechanical and Audubon Metals. This is free and open to the public. Door prizes will also be given away!

40-Hour Underground Coal Mining Class

Henderson Community College Workforce Solutions is offering a 40-hour underground coal mining class. The class will be held at the Herron Center, Morganfield, KY on April 27th, 28th and May 4th, 5th from 8:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m. The class is free to Kentucky residents, non-resident cost is $180.00. The class is limited to the first 30 participants, so register today! Interested individuals must be able to travel to Madisonville for the testing and drug screen ($66.25 cost for drug screen).

Civic Health Initiative

Secretary of State Alison Lundergan Grimes will lead a roundtable discussion at Henderson Community College as part of the inaugural Civic Health Initiative on Tuesday, April 9th, 12:30 p.m. on the stage at the HCC Fine Arts Center. This is one of a statewide series of discussions at Kentucky’s universities and colleges to improve Kentucky’s overall civic health.

Grimes developed the Initiative to establish new partnerships and formulate fresh strategies to reverse the trend of declining civic engagement revealed by the Civic Health Index her office released in March 2012.

“I have been overwhelmed by the response to and participation in the Initiative,” said Grimes. “These events have brought together diverse individuals, including students and leaders in government, education, business and the community, who share my belief that Kentucky is at its best when everyone is engaged and my commitment to moving Kentucky forward.”

Topics discussed by the local panelists and audiences have spanned all facets of citizenship and engagement, including voter registration and participation, volunteerism, community involvement and civic education.

“The Civic Health Forum will provide an opportunity to discuss civic engagement levels in our community and how we can enhance active citizenship,” said Dr. Kris Williams, HCC president. “I hope our students and our community will attend this important event.”

Opening Night for Writers' Coffeehouse

Fourth Friday Writers’ Coffeehouse is an outreach of the Henderson Community College Literary Magazine. The event is open to the public. Come and enjoy a relaxing evening with talented writers, musicians, and artists.

The coffeehouse takes place 6 to 9 PM, Friday, March 29th, 2013, at Planters Coffeehouse on 130 N. Main St. in Henderson, KY. Live music is by Jarrek Stone. Open Mic is at 6:30. Guest speakers begin at 7 PM. More live music and an artist showcase at 8 PM.

Opening night guest speakers are two talented authors: Jude Roy and Nathaniel Carroll.

Jude Roy was born and raised in Chatagnier, Louisiana. He attended college at the University of Southwestern Louisiana and studied writing under Ernest Gaines. He received his MFA from George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia where he studied writing under Richard Bausch and Alan Cheuse. His stories, poetry, and essays have appeared in The Southern Review, American Short Fiction, The Fiction Writer, The Southern Indiana Review, Zuzu's Petal Quarterly, Prism International, and National Public Radio among others. He is currently teaching writing at Madisonville Community College.

Nathaniel Carroll was born in Prestonsburg, Ky and has lived in Henderson pretty much his entire life. He started writing as a child, imitating Brian Jacques’ Redwall series, and currently finds inspiration through the works of David Sedaris, Carl Sagan, Sam Harris, and Richard Dawkins (among others). He covers a range of styles, from creative non-fiction, short fiction, and non-fiction essays, and self-publishes a majority of his work through various e-reading platforms. His e-collections can be found on both Amazon Kindle and B&N Nook. Nathaniel is an HCC alumnus and a two-time winner of the Literary Magazine’s fiction awards. He is currently a student at USI.
