HCC offers Minority Enrichment Program

HCC is offering a one-week enrichment program for middle school minority students. The program will take place on the campus of Henderson Community College in The Student Center, June 16th through June 20th 8:30 a.m. – 12:00 noon. The program is free to participants and a light breakfast, lunch and transportation to and from Henderson Community College are provided daily.

The Summer Enrichment Program has 3 main objectives: 1. - to provide academic enrichment activities for middle and junior high school (grades 6-8), minority students and encourage them to stay in school and enter college; 2. - make young minority students aware of the benefits and value of college and consider college as an achievable option; and 3. - prepare these students to be successful in college level work and persist to college graduation.

The Governor’s Minority Student College Preparation Program / Summer Enrichment Experience Program was established to assist in addressing the issues of attrition, lower GPA’s and undecided majors experienced by minority students according to grant research. The involvement of KCTCS will address these issues by offering academic enrichment activities (Math, Reading, Computer Science, Technical information, and Multi-cultural Education) as tools to encourage students to remain in school and ultimately enroll in college. The Summer Enrichment Program is funded by The Kentucky Council on Postsecondary Education.

Applications for the 2014 program will be available on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in the guidance office at the following schools; Henderson North Middle School, Henderson South Middle School and Union County Middle School. The applications are to be completed by parents and students then returned to the school counselor, who will complete the last page, The Student Academic Profile, before being forwarded to HCC. APPLICATION DEADLINE IS MONDAY, MAY 12, 2014.
