Changes to Nursing Admission Criteria / Point System

* These are temporary admission requirements/point scale effective 10/20/22 *

This scale is designed to objectively evaluate applicants for the Associate Degree Nursing Program. Admission is based on this structured point system. Admission is limited to available seats. Applicants with the highest total points will be admitted to the program. 

Nursing Admission Point Scale Calculation: ACT OR TEAS OR HESI A2 (within the past 5 years and must have taken one-will calculate based on the highest point total if more than one exam has been taken) + GPA points + points from BIO 137, BIO 139, BIO 225 and MAT 150 + 5 points for successful completion of 12 graded (non-developmental) college hours= total points.

1. Students with an unencumbered, active Practical Nurse license will be given an additional 5 points.

2. A student cannot receive points for both high school GPA and college GPA. A student will only receive points for their high school GPA if they do not have 12 hours of college credit. *Students with less than a 2.5 GPA are ineligible to apply for the program.

3. Students must earn a “C” or higher in BIO 137, BIO 139, BIO 225, and MAT 150

4. Students may be offered a seat in a nursing class contingent on completion of requirements (for example, pre-requisite courses as determined by the curriculum).  Should a student fail to complete the predetermined requirements, the offered seat will be withdrawn.

5. In order to qualify for the Henderson Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program, a student must have an academic record free of disciplinary action.  Students with disciplinary violations in any college within the KCTCS system or who have transcripts from other colleges indicating conduct violations will be considered ineligible for the program.

6. The Nursing Admissions Committee reserves the right to require an interview of any applicant to the Henderson Community College Associate Degree Nursing Program.

**In the event of a tie in total points, the applicants’ GPAs will be rank ordered to determine admission to the ADN program

If a student has been unsuccessful (earned a D, E, F, or W) in any nursing course in any nursing program, the student will be required to comply with the following additional standards:

a. If the student attended Henderson Community College, the student will be required to submit two letters of support from nursing faculty members, unless the student is unable to obtain endorsement due to retirement or other separation of employment.  The student will then be required to submit an essay detailing the circumstances of the student’s previous unsuccessful attempt, changes the student has made and steps the student will make to ensure success in the future.  The student may also be required to interview with members of the Nursing Admissions Committee.

b. The student may also be required to interview with members of the Nursing Admissions Committee. 

c. Students who have been unsuccessful (earned a D, E, F, or W) in any nursing course in any nursing program will receive a 5-point deduction for each unsuccessful attempt.

d. Students seeking admission who have been unsuccessful (earned a D, E, F, or W) in any nursing course in any nursing program will be considered on a case-by-case basis and not by general point ranking alone.
