STUDENT SPOTLIGHT - SAMANTHA BECKER

We are proud to announce that Nursing student Samantha Becker has been named a 2024 New Century Transfer Pathway Scholar and will receive a $2,250 scholarship to continue her nursing studies at Northern Kentucky University this fall.

Samantha’s application – which required her to write eight essays and complete numerous forms – received the highest score in the state of Kentucky! Over 2,200 students from 1,300 college campuses nationwide were nominated, but only one student from each state was selected. Nominations were evaluated on academic achievement, leadership, service, and significant endeavors.

“On behalf of everyone at Henderson Community College (HCC), I’m thrilled to congratulate Samantha on receiving this prestigious award,” said Jason Warren, President and CEO of HCC. “She is truly deserving of this scholarship. Despite the demands of being a full-time nursing student, wife, and sharing four children with her husband Kevin, she has maintained a 4.0 GPA and demonstrated exemplary leadership and clinical skills.”

Samantha was nominated by one of her nursing instructors, Lisa Heflin. “Samantha exhibits an exceptional character with poise, resilience, and self-discipline that is evident in her actions,” Heflin stated. “As the Student Liaison for all second-semester nursing students, Samantha met with her fellow students and then brought their concerns to faculty advisors during our monthly meetings.”

In addition, Samantha regularly led nursing student study groups and helped provide support, encouragement, and tutoring to her peers.

Samantha will graduate from HCC in May 2024 with her RN degree and will pursue her BSN through online courses at Northern Kentucky University while working full-time as an Endoscopy RN at Digestive Care Center in Evansville.

The New Century Pathway Scholarship program is sponsored by the Coca-Cola Foundation and the Coca-Cola Scholars Foundation, with support from the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) and Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society. Samantha has been a member of HCC’s Phi Kappa chapter of PTK throughout her time on campus.

Samantha, her husband, Dr. Warren, and Ms. Heflin, will attend the national AACC Convention in Louisville on April 8 to formally accept her award.
